Florida officer killed; suspect in custody

USA TODAY

PINIELLAS COUNTY, Fla. - A police officer was shot and killed early Sunday in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. at an apartment complex on Grand Boulevard in Tarpon Springs, about 25 miles from Tampa. Police were originally called for a noise ordinance complaint with a suspect banging on residential doors. When police arrived, the suspect shot one of the officers and then attempted to flee in a vehicle.

Police caught up with the suspect and he is now in custody.

A news conference will be held later this morning to provide further details.

The shooting comes just a day after two New York City police officers were killed in an ambush-style shooting.
