Baseball roundup: Millville knocks out Lenape

The Millville High School baseball team lived up to its nickname, bolting to seven-run lead after three innings en route to a 13-6 upset over Lenape in a South Jersey Group 4 quarterfinal game Thursday.

The Thunderbolts, seeded seventh, took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Luis Vargas’ two-run homer. They made it 10-1 in the third inning on the strength of leadoff hitter Buddy Kennedy’s two-run single.

Kennedy finished with four hits and three RBIs, while Nick Grotti knocked in three runs on a double and a pair of sacrifice flies.

The No. 2 Indians closed the gap to 10-6 on a fourth-inning grand slam by Jake Topolski but were shut down the remainder of the game by relief pitcher Bobby Roslewicz, who struck out six in 32/3 innings.

• Clearview 2, Toms River North 0: The top-seeded Pioneers scored twice in the third inning as Tim Dezzi singled home Trip McCaffrey and John Cooper.

It was all the offense Kenny Mendoza needed as he shut down the No. 8 Mariners with a complete game, scattering five hits and registering six strikeouts.

• Egg Harbor Township 11, Cherokee 9: Dante DiPalma doubled and homered, and Jordan Sweeney clubbed a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to lift the No. 12 Eagles over the No. 4 Chiefs. DiPalma finished with four RBIs, while Nick Pera and Andrew Holmes each drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles.

• Washington Twp. 13, Cherry Hill West 1: The No. 11 Minutemen posted a 12-4 advantage in hits over the No. 3 Lions en route to the upset. Joe Stover drove in three runs, while Ryan Swift, Alex Gattinelli and Luke Kaschak knocked in two runs apiece.

S.J. GROUP 3

• Ocean City 6, Central Regional 0: Sean Mooney improved his record to 7-0, tossing a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts. The top-seeded Red Raiders were led offensively by Josh Arnold, who scored three times and drove in a run, and Dom Fiorentino, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Mainland 4, Lacey Twp. 1: The two-time defending champions got a four-hitter out of sophomore Nick Atohi.

S.J. GROUP 2

• West Deptford 2, Barnegat 1: The top-seeded Eagles went up against arguably the country’s top scholastic pitcher – the highly touted Jason Groome – and didn’t blink, scoring a pair of first-inning runs and held on for the victory. Ryan Baglivo lined a single to score Matt Britt and crossed the plate on a wild throw for a 2-0 lead.

The Bengals stranded eight runners as West Deptford’s Drew Wilden and Derek Wakeley, along with a strong defense, kept the Ocean County club scoreless until the sixth inning.

• Manchester Twp. 4, Haddonfield 1: John Cristino drove in John Tedeschi in the bottom of the seventh inning to avert a shutout as the No. 2 Bulldawgs were upset by the No. 10 Hawks.

• Audubon 11, Gateway 3: R.J. Concepcion powered the No. 4 Green Wave with three hits and six RBIs, while Matt Polatta chipped in with a pair of RBIs.

• Cinnaminson 10, Collingswood 9: Mike McAndrews doubled and homered, driving in a pair of runs and scoring three times, while Jake Perkins was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for the No. 6 Pirates.

S.J. GROUP 1

• Pennsville 6, Woodbury 3: The No. 2 Eagles rallied from a 3-2 deficit on a fifth inning, two-run double by Jeremy Boucher, followed by Dustin Garrison’s game-winning RBI single. Ed Camp hit a solo home run to put Pennsville up 1-0 in the first inning.

• Pitman 5, Palmyra 0: Alex Garafolo had a two-run single, while Brandon Foley and Cameron Rivera chipped in with RBIs to lead the winners. Bill Cavender earned the win, fanning a dozen and scattering five hits.

• Wildwood 7, Burlington City 1: A lone walk deprived Chris Mormile of a perfect game for the No. 3 Warriors. Mormile recorded 18 strikeouts en route to his first career no-hitter and helped his own cause with a sixth-inning, two-run double that plated Andrew Mormile and Will Helm.

C.J. GROUP 3

• Nottingham 6, Moorestown 0: The No. 14 Quakers managed two hits by Chris Baker and Brian McMonagle.

C.J. GROUP 2

• Delran 12, Robbinsville 2: The top of the batting order paved the way as the No. 3 Bears throttled the Ravens. Leadoff hitter Wilson Seville and Ryan Albertson combined for four hits and five RBIs, while Cody Bowyer had three singles, scored twice and drove in a run.

NON-PUBLIC A SOUTH

• Camden Catholic 3, Donovan Catholic 2: Chris Holmes stroked a fifth-inning, two-out RBI single to plate the winning run as the No. 4 Irish turned back an upset attempt by the No. 13 Griffins. Nolan Gerold put Camden Catholic in front 2-0 with a two-run homer in the first inning.

• St. Augustine 2, St. John Vianney 0: Kris Morgenweck tossed six scoreless innings, striking out six, and Jack Billings earned his fourth save of the year. Offensively, the No. 6 Hermits scored twice in the fifth inning on back-to-back, run-scoring doubles by Dan Pavlik and Jake Catalano.

NON-PUBLIC B SOUTH

• Holy Spirit 13, Mater Dei 0: Billy Kral fanned 12 en route to a five-inning no-hitter for the No. 9 Spartans. Matt Rivera hit a two-run homer, while Drew Gallagher and Domenic Boselli combined to knock in five runs.

• Immaculata 3, Moorestown Friends 1: Alex Ounjian, AJ Dunham and Mitchell Mullock each had two hits for the No. 7 Foxes.

NONLEAGUE

• Maple Shade 6, LEAP Academy 4: The Wildcats traveled to Campbell’s Field in Camden and came away with a win behind Damien Bowman-Clark, who had a pair of RBI singles, and Luke Kinnerman, who struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings.
