MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — Several people were injured Tuesday night in a shooting with a deputy at Muskegon Heights Academy High School.

Emergency crews on the scene of a shooting at Muskegon Heights High School in Muskegon Heights, Mich., on Feb. 9, 2016.

Muskegon Heights Police Chief Joseph Thomas Jr. said deputies from the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office and officers from his department were at the game to prevent a group of people from entering the basketball game between Muskegon Heights and Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills after hearing the group was looking to settle a score related to a fight in Grand Rapids last week.

After being kept out of the game, the group, two of whom were former Muskegon Heights students, went to to a parking lot by the football field.

When one of the group refused a deputy's order to drop his weapon and then turned it toward the deputy, Thomas said the deputy "did what he was trained to do." The chief didn't elaborate on the shooting injuries beyond that.

Mercy Health Hackley Hospital confirmed receiving patients from the shooting. The conditions of the injured were not immediately known. According to WOOD-TV, the hospital went on lockdown, a common security measure.

A spokesman for the Grand Rapids Public Schools said district leaders were notified of the shooting. No district students, parents, supporters or staff were believed to have been involved, the spokesman said, adding everyone from GRPS was safely on their way home. He couldn't provide any other details.

In a tweet, Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System Superintendent Alena Zachery-Ross said classes Wednesday were canceled and counselors would be available to talk to students.
