Judge: Deptford man must be tried in 2012 fatal stabbing of nephew

Courier-Post

WOODBURY – A man accused of fatally stabbing his nephew during a dispute at an apartment complex two years ago will have to stand trial on murder charges.

The ruling came Monday after lawyers for 47-year-old Chad Gatewood of Deptford tried to get his indictment dismissed.

They claimed the Gloucester County grand jury that indicted Gatewood last June should have been told his nephew, 20-year-old Elijah Gatewood-Gabriel, also had a knife and was high on cocaine when the attack occurred in May 2012 at the Inverness Apartments.

They claimed Gatewood may have been defending himself while the pair argued inside their unit, where they lived with the victim's mother.

But county prosecutors argued there was "no indication" that Gatewood was threatened or that his nephew used his knife.

Crime scene tape marks the Inverness Apartment complex unit where Elijah Gatewood-Gabriel was stabbed to death.
