BELLMAWR – Police arrested a Bellmawr man on charges that he burglarized two vehicles and set one of them on fire.

Anthony Costello of Colonial Road was held in Camden County Jail after Bellmawr officers arrested him at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said officers saw Costello enter two vehicles, including one that was parked in a driveway close to a home.

They apprehended him after he exited the second vehicle and then realized the interior was on fire, police said. Officers quickly extinguished the blaze.

“We would like to give special attention and thanks to Sgt. Michael Ryan, Cpl. John Mader and Patrolman David Kenney,” the police department said in a Facebook post. “If not for their quick actions this situation could have resulted in the total loss of a vehicle, a residence and, more importantly, the lives of the two residents that were sleeping inside their home.”

Police did not disclose the location of the crime. They charged Costello with arson, burglary and theft.

Costello also is a suspect in other recent vehicle burglaries, police said.
