GLOUCESTER CITY – Police have charged a man accused of swiping the Stars and Stripes from a Gloucester City convenience store.

Francis M. DiRubbo, 21, of Voorhees was charged with theft. He stole an American flag attached to the front of Express Food Market on Monmouth Street and damaged the wall when pulling the flag holder, police said. The theft occurred about 2:15 a.m. on Thanksgiving.

Police said they identified DiRubbo as their suspect with help from Facebook followers who saw their post seeking assistance.

DiRubbo later returned the flag to the store’s owner and apologized for the theft, police said.
